The Mesa Fire and Medical Department is in mourning following the unexpected death of firefighter paramedic Mark Keller, who was found deceased while on duty on the morning of May 6th. In a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix, the department shared that Keller had devoted 35 years to serving the Mesa community, having commenced his career with them in 1990.
While details are sparse concerning the circumstances of his passing, Mesa Mayor Mark Freeman, reflecting on his own ties with the late firefighter, told FOX 10 Phoenix, “As a retired Mesa Fire Captain Paramedic, Mark and I served together for many years, and I had the privilege of witnessing his dedication to our community firsthand.” Freeman extended “heartfelt condolences to the Keller family, his crew and all members of the Mesa Fire and Medical Department.”
In addition to the mayor’s expressions of sympathy, Mesa Fire Chief Mary Cameli addressed the loss, stating to AZ Family, “My heart is with the Keller family in this difficult time. We are deeply saddened by the loss.” Cameli informed that support services, including peer support and fire chaplains, are in place to aid the Keller family and department members.
