Hit-and-run driver was going 83 mph with alcohol level nearly 3x the legal limit: prosecutors

A hit-and-run driver with a blood alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit was going 83 mph on Division Street moments before he slammed into another car, causing severe injuries to its driver, prosecutors say.

Rasean Cummins, 28, also hit a police car in Chicago and sped away after the cops stopped him to investigate the December 9, 2023, crash, according to the allegations. Court records show he was also on bail for a gun case at the time, but he was found not guilty in that matter earlier this year.

In recently filed charges, prosecutors said Cummins was driving southbound in the 1200 block of North Homan Avenue in a blue Tesla Model 3 on December 9, 2023, reaching 83 mph just five seconds before the crash. He was still going 68 mph a half-second before the collision, officials said…
