Bullet fired from roadway struck, killed woman inside her Berthoud home

BERTHOUD, Colo. — A Berthoud woman, whose death was initially described as “suspicious,” died after she was struck by a bullet fired into her home seemingly at random, according to court documents obtained by 9NEWS Investigates.

Around 11:30 p.m. April 28, deputies with the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home in the 500 block of First Street in Berthoud. The caller reported that her mother, Jennifer James, was bleeding and not breathing and that a window to the home was shattered. The caller also said there were no firearms in the home.

She went on to say that she, her mother and brother had just returned home from the movies when her brother heard “popping noises” and glass breaking. Her brother noticed blood on their mother and reported that she said she had been shot before she collapsed to the ground, the arrest affidavit says…
