College Senior’s Persistent “Cold” Turns Out to Be Leukemia
Breeze Hunter, a 22-year-old senior at Texas A&M University, thought she had a lingering head cold. For two months, she battled fatigue, shortness of breath, and persistent headaches. Campus doctors initially diagnosed a sinus infection, attributing her symptoms to the demanding schedule of a full-time student and sorority member.
However, Hunter’s condition worsened. Blood tests revealed alarming irregularities, prompting a referral to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. The devastating diagnosis: acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer.
A Whirlwind of Treatment and TikTok Fame
Hunter’s treatment began immediately. Her first round of chemotherapy drastically reduced the percentage of abnormal blast cells in her blood.
A second, more grueling round of chemo followed, along with 11 days of radiation therapy. Confined to her hospital room, Hunter found solace and humor in creating TikTok videos, including a viral parody of MTV’s “Cribs” showcasing her hospital room.
Throughout her ordeal, Hunter drew strength from her family, boyfriend, friends, and fellow AML patients. She found comfort in connecting with others facing similar challenges, sharing experiences, and offering mutual support.
A Successful Transplant and a Walk to Remember
In December, Hunter achieved remission. However, a stem cell transplant was necessary to ensure long-term recovery.
Fortunately, her brother proved to be a perfect donor match. The transplant, though difficult, was successful.
Despite facing weight loss and mucositis, a common side effect of cancer treatment, Hunter persevered. She continued her studies online, determined to graduate with her class.
On May 9, she proudly received her degree in agricultural leadership and development with economics. And yes, she walked at graduation.
Hunter’s journey is a testament to her resilience and the power of support. With her cancer treatments behind her, she looks forward to a well-deserved family vacation and the simple joy of “going back to normal.”
