Horry County councilman reacts to bill that would give sheriff’s office control of police department

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A state representative recently filed a bill that would give the Horry County Sheriff’s Office control of the police department and make the sheriff the chief law enforcement officer in the county for the first time in more than 60 years.

Horry County Rep. William Bailey says Act 21 of 1959 helped create the Horry County Police Department. However, the South Carolina constitution makes the sheriff the chief law enforcement officer for each county.
