A tragic incident unfolded at Treasure Shores Beach Park in Vero Beach yesterday, as a high school senior from Sebastian River High School drowned after being caught in a rip current. According to WPBF, the 18-year-old male student was part of a group of students who had gone to the beach after a senior event organized by the school.
The distress call was received around 1:40 p.m., and teams from Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, Indian River Fire Rescue, the Indian River Shores Public Safety Department, and an on-duty lifeguard responded swiftly. They practiced life-saving efforts in a bid to save the student’s life before he was taken to Sebastian River Medical Center, where he later succumbed to the incident. The name of student was not released by authorities in the immediate aftermath.
Following the tragedy, the school district sent condolences to the student’s family and friends.
