BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Today – Monday, May 12: We are starting the work week with a First Alert Weather Day in place due to concerns about isolated flooding and the potential for a few strong storms. A Flood Watch remains in effect until 7 p.m. as rounds of showers and storms could continue across central Alabama. While we’re not expecting widespread severe weather, storms that do form could bring locally heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and frequent lightning. Some isolated areas could pick up 1 to 2 inches of rain in a short period, especially in spots that have already seen rain over the weekend.
Temperatures today are expected to remain below average, with highs likely in the mid 70s under mostly cloudy skies. Areas that stay rain-free longer may briefly warm into the upper 70s, but overall, it’ll be a cooler and more unsettled day.
The Next 24 Hours: Rain and storms should gradually diminish in coverage this evening, though we can’t rule out a few lingering showers overnight. Skies remain mostly cloudy with lows expected to drop into the upper 50s to near 60. Tuesday is shaping up to be another day with scattered to isolated showers and storms. Highs are expected to rebound into the mid 70s to low 80s.
The Next Big Thing: Wednesday will likely bring more sunshine and drier weather. Highs are expected to climb into the mid 80s, with comfortable humidity levels. By Thursday, a southerly wind returns, and with it, slightly warmer and more humid conditions. A few isolated showers or storms could pop up Thursday afternoon, but most areas will likely stay dry.
By Friday, moisture increases a bit more, and we may see a few scattered storms develop during the afternoon and evening hours, mainly across west Alabama. Rain chances are currently around 20 percent, and highs will likely reach the mid to upper 80s…
