Get Ready for May’s Micromoon!
While April showers may bring May flowers, this month’s full moon, known as the Flower Moon, will offer a slightly different spectacle. On Monday, May 12, skygazers can witness a micromoon. This occurs when the moon reaches its furthest point from Earth, approximately 251,000 miles away, making it appear smaller than a typical full moon.
The Flower Moon will reach peak illumination at 12:56 p.m. EDT. While much of the country is expected to have clear skies, the Southeast, West, and Northwest may experience some cloud cover.
The Old Farmer’s Almanac lists several names for May’s full moon, reflecting the return of warmer weather and seasonal changes: Corn Planting Moon, Milk Moon, Hare’s Moon, and even Vesak, Buddha Jayanti, or Buddha Purnima.
