Trial begins for man accused of killing 4-year-old in East Side shooting

More than seven years after 4-year-old De’Earlvion Lee Whitley, also known as “Little Earl,” was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting on the East Side, the final defendant in his case is heading to trial.

John Chatmon, 42, is one of five people who were charged after Whitley was fatally shot in the head during an apparent drive-by shooting. Multiple suspects fired 65 bullets from a passing vehicle on July 19, 2017, around midnight, at a home in the 200 block of Hub Avenue, police said.
