50 years in federal prison for gangbanger who kidnapped and raped Uber driver

A Chicago man with a serious criminal history was given a 50-year federal prison sentence on Tuesday for kidnapping three motorists at gunpoint while on pretrial release in 2021, including an Uber driver whom he raped.

Facing a mix of charges including kidnapping, carjacking, and using a firearm during a violent crime, Andrew Anania, 29, pleaded guilty to some charges last Halloween and was found guilty of all other counts by a jury in January.

Prosecutors asked U.S. District Judge Edmond Chang to sentence Anania to life in prison followed by seven more years. Chang decided on a total sentence of 600 months.

Back in 2014, Anania was charged with murdering a 16-year-old rival gang member, but he later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.
