Man pepper-sprayed by stranger in North Berkeley

A man who came out of his tent to investigate a disturbance on Shattuck Avenue in North Berkeley was pepper-sprayed by a stranger Monday afternoon, authorities report.

The incident took place in the 1600 block of Shattuck Avenue between Virginia and Lincoln streets, Berkeley police said in response to a Scanner inquiry.

Authorities said the suspect — later identified as 35-year-old Ian Herzog — pepper-sprayed the other man for no apparent reason at about 3:10 p.m…
