Records allege West High teacher charged with rape tried to remove device from classroom

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A personnel file revealed details about the West High School teacher facing statutory rape charges.

Chad Brooks, 32, was indicted on multiple counts of aggravated statutory rape and statutory rape by an authority figure following an investigation by the Knoxville Police Department’s Special Crimes Unit. The May 7 indictment alleges that the behavior took place between January 2024 and March 2025.

Brooks was placed on administrative leave with pay on April 3, 2025, according to an administrative leave action memo in his personnel file. A month later, he was placed on leave without pay on May 9.

A letter in the file from KCS superintendent Dr. Jon Rysewyk dated May 6, 2025 — after Brooks was placed on leave — accuses Brooks of contacting a school employee on April 4 and asking them to remove items from Brooks’ classroom, including a school-issued device he was told to leave in the classroom.
