What to know about the separate civil case against Christopher Schurr

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Three years after former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr shot and killed 26-year-old Patrick Lyoya during a traffic stop, his murder trial ended with a hung jury.

Schurr was charged with second-degree murder in Lyoya’s death back in 2022. It began with a traffic stop on April 4, when Schurr pulled Lyoya over.

Lyoya got out of his vehicle and disregarded Schurr’s commands. Then began a brief physical struggle, lasting for 2 minutes and 38 seconds exactly, as the two fought over Schurr’s taser…
