Albany Fire Department honors teen for helping save child trapped in house fire

ALBANY, Ore. – Albany fire officials awarded a teenager the Civilian Bravery Award for acting quickly to help save a trapped child from a house fire in March, according to the Albany Fire Department.

AFD officials said that 11-year-old Rachael Vollard was outside of her Airport Road home on March 31 when she saw smoke coming from a range vent. As the front door was locked and her younger brother was still inside the home, Vollard ran to a neighbor’s home for help where 16-year-old Juventino Santoyo immediately called 9-1-1, fire officials said. Authorities said Santoyo forced the door open while on the phone with dispatchers and Vollard ran inside through toxic smoke, intense heat, and growing flames to rescue her brother who was in a bedroom near the active fire…
