LOGAN SQUARE — Miko’s Italian Ice, a beloved summer staple, is facing backlash after an employee alleged she was fired on her first day for declining to remove a face mask while on the job.

Hope Tostarelli’s account of being fired has been widely shared on social media — but one of the owners of Miko’s, which opened its Logan Square and Irving Park locations for the season last month, is disputing her claims.

Earlier this week, Tostarelli arrived at the Logan Square location, 2236 N. Sacramento Ave., for her first day of work, wearing a face mask and excited to start a summer job close to her home, she said.
