Colorado band rafts penniless down the Snake River, Idaho’s generosity keeps them afloat

MELBA, Idaho — A group of musicians from Colorado set out to prove whether music alone could sustain them during a three-week rafting trip down the Snake River. What they discovered was something far more valuable than food or money.

The band “A Brother’s Fountain,” which specializes in what they call “campfire folk.” The musicians embarked on their “Only Music” experiment this month, floating 120 miles from Melba, Idaho, to Huntington, Oregon, with nothing but their instruments.

“We don’t bring any food or money to start the journey,” said Justin Fountain, musician and co-founder of the band. “We say we’re gonna go from point A to Point B and we’re gonna rely on music…We trade music for all provisions and put music to the test and the power of music to bring people together.”…
