Inmate found dead at North Kern State Prison in January was strangled to death: coroner

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The inmate who was found dead at North Kern State Prison in January died of asphyxiation and his death was ruled as homicide, the Kern County Coroner’s Office said.

Enrique Gomeztagle, 31, was found unresponsive in his cell on Jan. 29. Emergency medical personnel conducted life-saving measures but ultimately pronounced Gomeztagle dead, 17 News previously reported.

A postmortem examination determined the cause of death to be asphyxia due to strangulation with obstruction of the airway with an object.
