Bakersfield City Council retreats from rate hike

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A proposal to raise Bakersfield sewer rates by 300% has gone down the drain for now.

At Wednesday night’s city council meeting, there was a wave of opposition to the rate hike proposal from outraged Bakersfield residents. The council rescinded the plan to pay for upgrades to the city’s aging sewer system.

The rate increase was initially proposed after city officials came to grips with years of deferred maintenance and improvements to the sewage system as a whole, and urgent upgrades to the ailing sewage treatment plant in southeast Bakersfield, which is about 70 years old…
