A statewide crackdown on fraudulent license plates has resulted in more than 3,300 tickets and the recovery of 14 stolen vehicles, Governor Kathy Hochul announced Friday in Albany.
The initiative, dubbed “Operation Plate Check,” ran from April 26 through May 3 and targeted so-called “ghost cars”—vehicles using forged, altered, or obscured plates to avoid tolls, traffic cameras, and law enforcement detection. It marked the first coordinated statewide effort of its kind and involved New York State Police, the Department of Motor Vehicles, and more than a dozen local agencies.
“The safety of New Yorkers is my top priority,” Governor Hochul said. “This enforcement campaign reinforces ongoing efforts to crack down on individuals who are using fake and defaced plates to avoid paying tolls or detection by law enforcement.”…
