Local groups pushing to renovate Smith Family Cemetery in Willoughby Hills

There has been a push to obtain funds to renovate the Smith Family Cemetery in Willoughby Hills to honor the history of the ancestors, which includes the Revolutionary and Civil War veterans buried there.

Located behind the Local Tavern, 29007 Chardon Road, and the Cleveland Clinic building, the cemetery belonged to the Smith family in 1840, according to Linda O’Brien, founder and director of Liberty Camp USA.

Liberty Camp is a reenactment educational history camp based in both Lake and Geauga counties.

The earliest recognized death date on a stone in the cemetery is Nov. 4, 1836. There are a number of headstones that can no longer be read and some appear to be missing and/or misplaced, O’Brien said…
