Detroit Man Wins ‘Lucky For Life’ Lottery Prize, Opts for $390,000 Lump Sum Over Annual Payments

A stroke of incredible luck has befallen Micale Garland, a 64-year-old Detroit man, who won the Michigan Lottery’s “Lucky For Life” prize, which offers $25,000 annually for the rest of the winner’s life. Garland matched the five white balls drawn on April 28 – 16, 19, 20, 33, and 40 – according to an account by The Detroit Free Press. Initially, Garland believed the win to be a hoax. “When I saw the email from the Lottery about claiming a prize, I logged into my account and thought I was being pranked when I saw my account balance,” Garland recalled in a statement given to CBS Detroit.

Withstanding the shock of his win, Garland claimed his prize recently, opting for a one-time lump sum payment of $390,000 instead of the annuity payments of $25,000 year by year, the Michigan Lottery confirmed. In a released statement reported by CBS Detroit, Garland outlined his plans to use the winnings for a trip, saying, “It still feels like I’m living in a dream!” After taking a trip, he plans to save the remaining sum of his windfall.

While the odds of winning may seem daunting, “Lucky For Life” tickets are only $2 per play. The game offers people a chance to win a range of prizes from $3 to life-enriching cash payouts. Winners can bag themselves $1,000 a day for life by matching all five numbers and one Lucky Ball, or the $25,000 a year for life prize by matching just the five numbers, as per rules noted on the official Michigan Lottery site. Regular drawings are held every night at 10:38 p.m., inviting daily hope for participants…
