Then and Now: Brunswick Road

In this edition of “Then and Now,” we take a look at Brunswick Road in Montclair.

In Montclair’s march toward suburbanization, Brunswick Road fell into formation in 1907, when the developer C. Shaw Trowbridge Co. bought the Mayer tract, paving the way for three new blocks of single-family homes. Stretching from Midland Avenue to Valley Road, the tract would become part of a residential street attracting commuters.

The New York architects Walker & Hazzard designed enticing model homes. This postcard shows 33 Brunswick, built around 1910. “The Montclair Times” wistfully wrote when the pastoral land was on the cusp of transformation: “The sale marks the passing of another of the ‘old tracts’ of Montclair, it having been in the hands of the former owner for nearly half a century.”

“Then and Now,” a series, is a collaboration between Montclair History Center and Montclair Local.
