When temperatures rise in Lubbock, so do reports of burglaries, robberies, and thefts. That’s why the Lubbock Police Department is stepping up to remind us all how to stay safe as we head into the warmer months.
Whether you’re planning a family vacation, staying local for summer fun, or just want to avoid unwanted surprises, LPD has some helpful tips to protect your home, vehicle, and family.
Lock It Down—Even When You’re Home
First and foremost, don’t get too relaxed. LPD recommends always locking your doors and windows—even when you’re home. And while you’re at it, add a secondary lock to your windows for extra peace of mind. Your garage? Keep it closed and locked at all times. Fence gates? Go heavy duty with those padlocks.
Also, LPD reminds residents not to open the door without first checking who’s there. If someone you don’t know shows up, it’s OK to be cautious. In the worst-case scenario—if a stranger forces their way into your home—get out if you can, or lock yourself in a safe room, barricade the door, and call 911 immediately.
Headed Out of Town? Don’t Advertise It
If you’re leaving town, don’t broadcast your travel plans on social media. Instead, tell a trusted friend or neighbor to keep an eye on your house and collect any mail or packages. You can also call LPD at (806) 775-2865 and request a vacation watch. That way, officers on patrol can keep an extra eye on your place while you’re away.
Don’t Make It Easy for Car Thieves
Vehicle break-ins are another hot-weather headache. Never leave your keys in your car or let it run unattended—not even for “just a second.” And always lock your doors and roll up your windows, even in your own driveway…
