Ypsilanti group again pushes city to better protect renters after failed proposal

YPSILANTI, MI — An Ypsilanti group that has petitioned for public control of the police budget, nonpartisan elections and tenants rights is calling on city leaders to better protect renters.

Community members from the Ypsilanti Ballot Initiative Group —or YBIG — went before City Council Tuesday night, urging officials to ban or limit rental application fees, more rental data transparency and “the right of first refusal,” or first opportunity for current tenants to purchase their home if it goes to market.
