Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is facing a federal criminal investigation into testimony he gave to Congress last year. The Justice Department probe centers around statements Cuomo made regarding the state’s handling of nursing home deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The investigation, first reported by the New York Times, stems from accusations by House Republicans that Cuomo, now a New York City mayoral candidate, lied to the House Oversight Committee about the number of deaths in senior care facilities. Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) has previously asserted that Cuomo undercounted the death toll by a significant margin.
Cuomo maintains that he testified truthfully and has denied any wrongdoing. A spokesperson for Cuomo, Rich Azzopardi, dismissed the investigation as politically motivated “lawfare and election interference,” claiming neither he nor Cuomo had been informed of the probe prior to media reports.
The Justice Department’s investigation comes after it recently dropped a separate corruption case against current New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who is running for reelection against Cuomo. Advocacy group Voices for Seniors praised the investigation as “overdue” and pledged their full cooperation.
