US Army gives MV-75 designation to future tiltrotor assault aircraft

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – The US Army announced it will designate its Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft tiltrotors as MV-75s, which are expected to replace many of its H-60 Black Hawk helicopters and a portion of the special operations MH-60Ms.

The announcement comes after the Army chose a design from Bell based on its V-280 Valor tiltrotor as the winner of its FLRAA competition in 2022. The design is expected to be finalized by the end of the year, according to officials, and incorporated features intended to make it easier to convert baseline variants into special operations versions.

According to The War Zone and Bell, a breakdown of the MV-75 designation includes an “M” for “multi-mission” and a “V” to reference its capability for vertical takeoff and landing. The “75” in the MV-75 designation was confirmed as a reference to the service’s official founding date of June 14, 1775.

The official announcement of the MV-75 designation for FLRAA comes as the Army is looking to accelerate the fielding of the tiltrotors, as further noted by TWZ. The Army has previously stated goals for the MV-75 to start entering service by 2030, or more recently, a 2028 timeframe…
