Palisade, Colorado: A Wine Lover’s Dream Escape
Just four hours west of Denver lies Palisade, a charming town that has quickly become a personal favorite. Known as Colorado’s wine country, Palisade boasts over 30 wineries, thriving vineyards, and a unique desert climate perfect for growing a variety of grapes. From robust Cabernet Franc to crisp Riesling and delicate Rosé, there’s a vintage to suit every palate.
My favorite way to explore the area is by bicycle, easily rented from local shops, allowing me to visit several wineries in a single afternoon. For those who prefer a more leisurely approach, there are also shuttle tours, horse-drawn carriages, and even limousines available. No matter your mode of transportation, each winery offers breathtaking views of the vineyards, often set against the dramatic backdrop of the Grand Mesa, the world’s largest flat-top mountain.
But Palisade offers more than just wine. The surrounding natural beauty is stunning, with canyons, plateaus, and distinctive red rock formations.
Hiking trails offer glimpses of wild horses, and some canyons overlook the majestic Colorado River. During the summer months, the area comes alive with paddleboarders and rafters enjoying the refreshing waters.
Camping options abound, ranging from RV resorts and state parks to more primitive sites around the Grand Mesa.
Palisade is also a surprising agricultural hub. Known for its peaches, visitors can participate in seasonal peach picking at nearby orchards.
I’ve even stopped at roadside farm stands overflowing with fresh fruit and homemade jams. The town also hosts an annual bluegrass festival featuring national and local musicians.
While still relatively unknown outside of Colorado, Palisade is a true gem. With its unique blend of outdoor adventure, vibrant wine scene, and agricultural charm, it’s a refreshing alternative to the traditional mountain getaway. I look forward to returning to explore its remaining hidden treasures, including the breweries, distilleries, and restaurants that have caught my eye.
