Roanoke officials pushing for road diet on Williamson Road

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – Williamson Road is an almost 10-mile road that connects downtown Roanoke with Botetourt County. Statistics show it is also one of the most dangerous roads in the valley.

According to studies, almost 700 crashes have occurred across different portions of Williamson Road in the city of Roanoke since 2015, and 49 people have died on that section between 2019 and 2023. Both are the highest in Roanoke during that time.

Some say one of the main causes is a lot of conflict points.

“You have a lot of businesses that are located along Williamson Road,” Roanoke’s director of public works, Ross Campbell, said. “For folks that would like to get into that business or exit that business, there really is no refuge point for that, so those turning movements, either coming in or coming out, create potential conflicts.”…
