Roanoke County student protesters urge school board to take action to prevent bullying

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – A group of concerned Roanoke County Public Schools students protested outside the RCPS school board meeting Thursday evening, urging the board to do more to prevent bullying in schools. The protest comes over two months after the death by suicide of 10-year-old Mountain View Elementary student Autumn Bushman.

“If the people who are supposed to protect our kids aren’t going to do their job, we’re going to make sure they do their job. We won’t back down. We may be 16 and 17, but we will be here,” said Emma Rench, a Northside High School student who helped organize the protest.

Rench said she and other students have been working with and supporting Bushman’s family at various events over the last two months. She said the school division has not done enough to support students in the aftermath of the tragedy…
