San Francisco Supervisor Joel Engardio Faces Potential Recall Over Upper Great Highway Closure

The campaign to recall San Francisco Supervisor Joel Engardio, which centers on the controversy over the permanent closure of the Upper Great Highway, claims to have exceeded the required signatures threshold. Jamie Hughes, the leader of the recall effort, reported to the San Francisco Chronicle that they have collected 14,000 signatures, surpassing the minimum 9,911 needed from District 4.

According to Mission Local, the campaign has ultimately decided to submit approximately 11,000 signatures to the Department of Elections following their internal validation process. An intricate verification process lies ahead, where elections officials will check a random sample of 5% of these signatures to confirm their validity. Should this random sampling indicate a validity rate that is more than 110% of the required number, the recall petition would then move forward automatically.

Engardio’s stance on Proposition K, which led to the creation of the Sunset Dunes park by closing the Upper Great Highway to cars, has been the spark for the recall initiative. Despite the proposition passing citywide, it was opposed by most voters in the Sunset and Richmond districts, closest to the Great Highway. Engardio, despite awaiting the results of the signature validation, told the San Francisco Chronicle, remains “confident” that if the recall goes to a vote, the majority of Sunset voters will reject it…
