Legendary singer-songwriter Billy Joel, 76, has announced the cancellation of upcoming concerts due to his recent diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). A statement released on his social media accounts explained that recent performances exacerbated the condition, leading to difficulties with hearing, vision, and balance. He is currently undergoing physical therapy and has been advised by doctors to refrain from performing to prioritize his recovery.
NPH occurs when excess cerebrospinal fluid accumulates within the skull, putting pressure on the brain. This condition primarily affects those over 65. While symptoms like memory loss, incontinence, and walking difficulties can mimic dementia, NPH is often treatable, especially with early diagnosis.
Joel expressed his sincere apologies to fans for the cancellations, thanking them for their understanding. This isn’t the first time health concerns have impacted his tour schedule.
Earlier this year, a medical condition, which was not disclosed, led to a four-month postponement. In February, Joel also experienced a fall on stage during a Connecticut performance.
