Mexico’s “Happy Coast” Beckons the Wealthy

Mexico’s “Happy Coast” Lives Up to Its Name

My recent trip to Mexico’s Costalegre started with a bumpy, three-hour drive from Puerto Vallarta, complete with potholes, mopeds, and a hefty, unexpected car rental fee. I’ll admit, I was skeptical of this so-called “Happy Coast.”

Costalegre, a 200-mile stretch along Mexico’s Pacific Coast, is a land of contrasts, where sleepy towns meet multimillion-dollar resorts. It’s a long-established haven for the elite, attracting everyone from rock stars to tech billionaires. The land here is largely privately owned, with a focus on preserving the natural beauty.

My week was a whirlwind of dirt roads, impromptu margarita meet-ups, and hopping between luxurious resorts. My preconceived notions of luxury being synonymous with extravagance were quickly challenged. Costalegre’s charm lies in its understated elegance and reverence for nature.

A Hidden Gem

Costalegre is still relatively unknown. When I mentioned my trip, most people pictured Cancun or Tulum.

This exclusivity is part of its appeal. It’s a place discovered through word-of-mouth, a whispered secret among those in the know.

The area’s history is as rich as its landscape. In the late 1960s, Italian banker Gian Franco Brignone was captivated by the region’s beauty and purchased thousands of acres, creating the vibrant and exclusive community of Careyes. This colorful enclave, with its brightly painted villas, has become a magnet for celebrities and discerning travelers.

Careyes paved the way for other luxury developments, including Cuixmala, Las Alamandas, the Four Seasons Tamarindo, and Las Rosadas. Unlike the bustling resorts of Cancun or Cabo, Costalegre offers a tranquil escape. Here, secluded beaches replace crowded pools, and the soundtrack is the rhythm of the waves, not thumping bass.

The Essence of Costalegre

The magic of Costalegre lies in its unique blend of simplicity, seclusion, and splendor. Imagine pristine beaches complemented by private infinity pools, or lush jungles enhanced by five-star service. It’s a place where you can find yourself completely alone on a stunning beach, a rare luxury in today’s world.

While luxury is woven into every experience, it’s not about ostentatious displays of wealth. It’s about appreciating the finer things in life, like a morning yoga class overlooking the ocean, or a casual conversation with fascinating people. It’s a place where nature takes center stage, offering activities like horseback riding and sunset picnics.

Beyond the resorts, the towns of Barra de Navidad and Melaque provide a glimpse into local life, with colorful markets and lively beaches. However, the allure of Costalegre, for many, is the tranquility and privacy of its exclusive resorts.

A Hope for the Future

Leaving the quiet serenity of Costalegre for the bustling airport was a jarring experience. But I carried with me a sense of calm and a newfound appreciation for this unique region.

The owners and developers of these properties are passionate about preserving the natural environment. They envision a future where Costalegre remains a hidden gem, even as they carefully expand their offerings. The hope is to maintain a balance between development and conservation, ensuring that the beauty of this “Happy Coast” endures for generations to come.
