Jailed Singer Chris Brown Makes Unlikely Prison Friends

Additional Coverage:

R&B star Chris Brown recently found himself performing for an unusual crowd — his fellow inmates at HMP Forest Bank in Salford, England. Brown was held at the facility after being denied bail on a grievous bodily harm charge stemming from an alleged February incident at a London nightclub. He was later released on $6.7 million bail.

Despite concerns that his celebrity status might make him a target, Brown was reportedly welcomed by other inmates, who even protected him. Sources suggest they were aware of his fame but less familiar with the intricacies of the British prison system.

Inside the privately run facility, Brown reportedly kept a low profile, sticking to basic meals. However, he did answer nightly requests for songs from fellow prisoners.

Before his release, Brown penned a thank you note to a fellow inmate named Dave, expressing gratitude for his support during his time in custody.

Brown’s arrest took place at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester in mid-May. He’s accused of assaulting music producer Abe Diaw with a bottle at London’s Tape nightclub.

Another U.S. citizen, Omololu Akinlolu, faces the same charge. Both men are due to appear at Southwark Crown Court in June.

Despite the legal proceedings, Brown has been permitted to continue his scheduled U.K. tour and subsequent U.S. tour dates as part of his bail conditions. Following his release, Brown acknowledged his fans and upcoming performances via social media.
