Prehistoric sloth remains uncovered near Lubbock as work starts on Loop 88

Officials discovered the remains of a giant ground sloth and other prehistoric animals near Lubbock while working on a new highway.

The Texas Department of Transportation contracted an archeological survey as part of the environmental review for Loop 88, a project to turn two-lane rural roads into a 12-mile, six-lane highway.

What they found was the bones of prehistoric megafauna, or large earth-roaming animals…
