Oregon National Guardsman smashes world record for hand-release push-ups

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — An Oregon military man has successfully broken the record for most hand-release push-ups completed in an hour.

Major Tommy Vu, a physician assistant with the National Guard, achieved 1,422 of these types of push-ups, which require outstretching the arms between repetitions to focus on form, according to the Oregon Military Department.

At a Salem gym on Friday, Vu smashed the current record, which stands at 1,250, according to Guinness World Records.

OMD noted that Vu added a fundraising component to his record attempt, donating one dollar for every push-up to benefit brain cancer research.

“My goal was to break the record, but when I talked to my commanding officer about it, he said if I didn’t get 1,350, that wouldn’t be good enough,” Vu said. “So I was really happy when I looked over and saw 1,350. I asked them to take a photo to show him I did it.”…
