Hundreds offer solemn salute to America’s war dead at Bakersfield’s 1000 Flags commemoration

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) – At cemeteries and public spaces throughout the nation on May 26, Americans gathered to salute those lost in America’s wars. That was the case here in Kern County as well, where the day was again commemorated by the 1000 Flags display at the Park at River Walk.

Many know Memorial Day for what it has become – the unofficial but traditional start of summer. Many know it as the first barbecue of the barbecue season. Most people know it for what it was always supposed to be – a memorial to the people who gave their lives for this country.

A solemn remembrance. A grateful commemoration of those who gave what Abraham Lincoln called “the last full measure of devotion” to the nation…
