Charlotte denied hosting CIAA tournament in 2027

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association’s (CIAA) marquee event won’t be returning to the Queen City anytime soon.

The Charlotte Regional Visitor’s Authority confirmed through a joint letter that the Division II conference’s men’s and women’s basketball tournaments will be held elsewhere from 2027-29. Baltimore, which has hosted the historically Black college event since 2021, also was a finalist.

The city of Charlotte partnered with the CRVA and Charlotte Sports Foundation to place a bid for the tournaments that were once a local staple. But being able to lock down the Spectrum Center in early March was key in the city securing the bid…
