CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – A decades old HIV medication could be a game-changer for people losing their vision to diabetes.
New research from UVA Health suggests a low-cost oral drug may significantly improve vision for patients with Diabetic Macular Edema (DME.)
“We’re all looking for alternatives that are safer, at least as effective if not more effective, and more convenient for patients,” Doctor Jayakrishna Ambati, founding director of UVA Health’s Center for Advanced Vision Science, said. “This clinical trial was using a drug called lamivudine, which has been out there in the market for several decades for HIV, but we in the lab found it works against diabetes as well.”…
