Prosecutors push for state hospital commitment in deadly 2021 Portland hit-and-run case

PORTLAND, Ore. — Victims spoke in court Tuesday about the chaotic moment a man suffering a mental health crisis went on a deadly hit-and run spree in Southeast Portland over four years ago.

According to witnesses and police, Paul Rivas intentionally ran down 10 pedestrians and bicyclists in Southeast Portland, in January of 2021. Jean Gerich, 77, died after she was struck during the incident.
