A multi-agency manhunt is underway for escaped convict and former Arkansas police chief, Grant Hardin, 56, who was serving a 30-year sentence for murder and rape. Hardin made a daring escape from the Calico Rock North Central Unit on Sunday afternoon, reportedly impersonating a corrections officer to fool a guard into opening a secure gate. While officials confirmed Hardin was not wearing an official uniform, the disguise was apparently convincing enough to facilitate his escape.
The search, now in its fourth day, is concentrated around the prison area in Izard County and surrounding counties. Authorities are utilizing helicopters, drones, K9 units, and ATVs, but the rugged terrain and recent heavy rains are hampering efforts.
Roadblocks and security checkpoints are in place, and neighboring states have been alerted due to Hardin’s ties to the Missouri border. Residents are urged to remain vigilant, lock their homes and vehicles, and report any suspicious activity immediately.
Hardin’s criminal history includes the 2017 murder of 59-year-old James Appleton and the 1997 rape of an elementary school teacher, a case featured in the 2023 documentary “Devil in the Ozarks.” Described as 6 feet tall and weighing 259 pounds, Hardin is considered extremely dangerous.
Former Benton County prosecutor Nathan Smith, who prosecuted Hardin, called him a “sociopath” with “no moral core.” Stone County Sheriff Brandon Long expressed fears that Hardin could hurt or kill someone before being apprehended.
The escape has been particularly distressing for Cheryl Tillman, the mayor of Gateway, Arkansas, and sister of Hardin’s murder victim. She described Hardin as “an evil man” and the situation as “déjà vu.” Authorities urge anyone with information about Hardin’s whereabouts to contact law enforcement immediately.
