Syracuse Police announces death of retired K9 Endy

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Syracuse Police Department announced the passing of retired K9 Endy on Wednesday afternoon.

“K9 Endy faithfully served alongside his handler, retired Officer Alvin Herrington, after they were partnered in April of 2018,” the Police Department wrote. “Together, they completed Patrol Tracking and Detector School. K9 Endy made history as the first SPD canine trained specifically in firearms detection. Building on this skill, Endy later expanded his training to include explosives detection.”

K9 Endy responded to more than 3,100 calls. Including:

  • 81 building searches
  • 45 area searches
  • 347 perimeter checks
  • 33 tracks
  • 25 explosive searches
  • 108 evidence searches
  • 30 criminal apprehensions
  • 75 officer protection deployments
