Toledo students turn trees into tools of learning at Scott Park

TOLEDO, Ohio — High school students from Toledo Public Schools are transforming fallen trees into benches, flower beds and animal enclosures, all while gaining real-world experience in forestry and construction along the way.

The initiative, part of a collaboration between Toledo Public Schools and construction firm Rudolph Libbe Inc., is centered at Scott Park, where students from the Natural Science Technology Center (NSTC) are using a portable sawmill to process lumber for use in a major renovation project.

“Today is an exciting time for collaboration and inclusion,” said Dr. Romules Durant, superintendent of Toledo Public Schools. “Rudolph Libbe has done a great job making sure our kids and programs are integrated into the construction project here at Scott Park.”…
