New signs honoring history at Austin’s first black cemetery unveiled

AUSTIN, Texas — New signs were unveiled at Bethany Cemetery in East Austin Saturday, honoring its significance as the city’s first black cemetery.

The signs, unveiled as part of a Juneteenth event, include QR codes that help visitors learn about the lives of the community and the land.

Many buried at the Bethany Cemetery were some of the first residents of East Austin, and many lived through enslavement and in Austin during the first Juneteenth holiday…
