Trident Medical Center to unveil new $10M neuro rehab unit this week

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Trident Medical Center says a new rehabilitation center set to open this week will increase access to specialized care for traumatic brain injury victims.

Trident leaders will hold a ribbon cutting on Wednesday for the facility’s 10-bed, $10 million Neuro Rehabilitation Unit. The new space will bring the total beds the hospital has dedicated to inpatient rehabilitation to 24.

Patients recovering from stroke or traumatic brain injuries and receiving treatment for other neurological disorders like Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis will have expanded access to services such as speech, occupational and physical therapy, Trident Health spokesman Rod Whiting said.

Patricia Simon, the program director of Trident’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Department, says one of the many features of the new unit is that it will be a locked unit, which is necessary for patients being treated for traumatic brain injuries, because many patients with traumatic brain injuries exhibit impulsiveness, which may be exhibited by wandering away.
