Former Fort Belvoir solider guilty of shaking, dropping infant twice, causing brain damage

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) — A former U.S. Army private pled guilty after he violently shook a premature baby before dropping her on two separate occasions, causing irreversible brain damage, according to the United States Attorney’s Office.

Austin Johnson was an active duty soldier at Fort Belvoir from October 2010 to September 2013.

On June 25, 2012, Johnson was watching an infant who was born prematurely just 16 days prior. The infant was crying when Johnson picked her up and carried her. However, after the crying continued, he put a hand under each arm and violently shook her before letting her go, according to a release.
