Temperatures to hit 80s, but dangerous waves, hypothermia a risk at Lake Michigan beaches

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Summer is here, school is already out for lots of kids, and daytime temps are forecast to reach into the 80s in parts of Michigan on Tuesday. Sounds like a great beach day – but it won’t be. An advisory from the National Weather Service is warning of dangerous wave conditions on a large part of Lake Michigan on Tuesday, and water temperatures so low they could cause hypothermia for any would-be swimmers.

This graphic from the NWS office in Grand Rapids shows the forecast for dangerous waves and currents puts a big section of the lake into the red “Do Not Swim” zone. Conditions are expected to develop late tonight and last into early Wednesday.

Winds could reach up to 25 mph.

“Dangerous waves develop tonight into Tuesday on Lake Michigan with a high swim risk between Holland and Manistee,” NWS meteorologists said today. “Hypothermia is also possible as lake temps remain in the mid to upper 40s. Remember to stay dry when waves are high!”…
