Debate heats up over downtown Ann Arbor library as city OKs high-rise zoning

ANN ARBOR, MI — Ann Arbor’s downtown library property is now officially rezoned for high-rise development.

And such a redevelopment is expected to happen whether or not it incorporates the city-owned Library Lane property next door, which is a question to be decided by city voters in August.

Despite pushback from critics, City Council voted 9-0 Monday night, June 2, to give final approval to rezone the Ann Arbor District Library’s 1.21 acres at the northeast corner of Fifth Avenue and William Street from public land to a D1 downtown core designation.

No development plans have been drawn up yet, but council members said they’re excited about the potential for a mixed-use development with housing above a new library…
