BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — Local emergency officials are closely watching a developing weather system off the southeastern U.S. coast that could bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and hazardous beach conditions to Berkeley County and surrounding areas starting Wednesday.
A low-pressure system is expected to form near the Florida and Georgia coasts and track inland across coastal South Carolina by Wednesday night, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Charleston. The system may bring 1 to 3 inches of rain, breezy conditions, and elevated rip current risks, especially along the coast.

“Berkeley County Emergency Management is monitoring this inclement weather risk for our area,” county officials posted to Facebook on Tuesday.
While the chance of the system becoming a tropical or subtropical cyclone remains low, NWS warns that the potential impacts would be similar regardless of its classification. Minor flooding in low-lying or poorly drained areas is possible, and wind gusts up to 40 mph may cause isolated power outages and downed tree limbs.
The forecast also includes a moderate risk for rip currents along all beaches Wednesday and Thursday, which may increase later in the week. Mariners should be cautious, with seas expected to build to 4 to 6 feet and winds gusting up to 25 knots.
