A pillar in the community: North Miami Beach funeral home owner honored during Small Business Month

To round out Small Business Month, which is celebrated nationally every May, the City of North Miami Beach honored a local Haitian family for its commitment to its community.

Dozens of civic leaders and community members turned out Saturday as the city celebrated a street renaming in honor of local funeral home director Evans St. Fort and his family. As of May 31, the portion of Northeast 165th Street between South Miami and Northeast 21st Avenue is officially known as “St. Fort Drive.”

The Miami Times spoke with St. Forth ahead of the dedication ceremony to gather his thoughts on the honor, the first of its kind for a Haitian family in the city.

“Honest to God, I was completely shocked,” he said. “I’ll be honest with you, I didn’t even see it coming. It’s not like anyone gave me a warning or said, ‘Hey, by the way, I’ll let you know we plan on doing something.’ I was completely taken back and surprised. We were elated when we found out.”…
