‘This is Even Better’ — Former Old Tent City Residents Secure Home in North Nashville

In early April, Mama V was skeptical about the city’s 60-day plan to close Old Tent City, a long-term encampment along the Cumberland River near downtown.

Mama V, her husband DC, friends, eight dogs and a cat lived in a camp there, centered around an RV. At the time, she said 60 days was too fast; that the city’s main transitional housing option, a motel near the airport, would not take her many pets; and that she liked the freedom of Old Tent City and would prefer, if she had to move, to find some empty land somewhere on which to park and start anew.

But on Monday, the last of the 60 days, Mama V was singing a new tune as she sat on the front porch of the North Nashville home she began moving into that morning. The residence was secured via the Office of Homeless Services’ Low Barrier Housing Collective…
